A sconce is a candle holder that is affixed to the wall of a home. This one is a reproduction of an early American forge worked sconce. Like the originals, these are forge worked in an American blacksmith shop. Iron shaped by fire and hammer, the photos do not do them justice. They are functional, yet decorative. Called a "plain" sconce due to their simple, single shaft construction, they were popular with early American colonists who needed function, yet simplicity. These would be perfect in the homes of Quakers, Amish and Mennonites and others.

Construction includes a single, strong hook beat from the iron at the top of the sconce, a blacksmith's twist down the shaft, a curved shelf to hold a drip pan and candle cup which is riveted to the sconce. All forge worked. Finish is stove black.
